Ask a Korean about Yeosu and there is a good chance they will hum a song. “Yeosu Night Sea” became a hit in 2012, and it turned this port on the south coast into the place couples go to look at the water after dark. The song is right: Yeosu is at its best when the bridges light up and the sea turns black and gold.
It is also a long way from Seoul, which is why many visitors skip it. That is the opportunity. The KTX takes about three hours, the city is compact, and two days is enough to see the best of it without a car.
Checked on October 21, 2026. Train times and fares are from a 2026 timetable; cable car fares and hours are from 2026 guides. Check the Korail site and the cable car operator before you go.

Seoul to Yeosu by train

The KTX runs from Yongsan Station in Seoul to Yeosu Expo Station, which is right by the sea and the old Expo site. Weekend trains sell out, so book as soon as your dates are fixed. If you plan to cover several cities by train in a few days, a rail pass may work out cheaper than single tickets; do the sums with your actual route.
In Yeosu, Day 1 is walking and city buses. For bus routes and walking directions, use Naver Map or KakaoMap; Google Maps does not do full directions in Korea, and the Korean apps need data. A Korean eSIM bundled with a T-money card covers data and bus fares in one step.
Things to do in Yeosu: a 2-day route

Day 1: Odongdo, the cable car and the night sea
Start with lunch near Yi Sun-sin Square, by the old harbor. The admiral who beat the Japanese navy in the 1590s based his fleet here, and there is a replica turtle ship by the water. The lanes around the square are full of places serving gejang baekban, soy-marinated crab with a spread of side dishes. It is salty, sweet and very Yeosu.
In the afternoon, walk to Odongdo. A long breakwater path takes you out to a small island covered in camellia trees and bamboo. Inside the forest the light breaks into small pieces and the air is cooler than outside. The camellias bloom from winter into spring; in autumn the island is about the green, quiet path and the views from the lighthouse. Entry is free.
Time the Yeosu Maritime Cable Car for sunset. It crosses the sea between Jasan Park on the city side and Dolsan Park on the island side, about 13 minutes each way. As the sky goes from orange to navy, the lights on Dolsan Bridge switch on one by one. A 2026 guide lists a return ticket at 17,000 won for a standard cabin and 24,000 won for the glass-floor crystal cabin, with the last ticket at 9 pm. On weekend evenings, arrive an hour before sunset to queue.
After dark, walk along the waterfront near Dolsan Bridge. The romantic pocha street, a row of tent bars by the sea, serves seafood on hot iron plates. Sit outside, order whatever is sizzling at the next table, and listen to the waves and the clatter.
Day 2: Hyangiram Hermitage and Dolsando
Hyangiram is the reason to wake up early. It is a small Buddhist hermitage built into the cliffs at the southern tip of Dolsando, facing the open sea. The path climbs stone steps and squeezes between huge boulders, then suddenly opens onto the whole South Sea. At sunrise the sun comes straight up out of the water.
It is far from the city, roughly 40 minutes by taxi and more than an hour by city bus. A taxi there and the bus back is a good compromise. Wear proper shoes; there are many steps.
On the way back, stop on Dolsan for lunch with gat kimchi, a sharp mustard-leaf kimchi this island is famous for. If you have time before the train, Aqua Planet Yeosu by the Expo site is a large aquarium and an easy indoor stop on a windy day.
Where to stay
Stay in the Expo and Odongdo area. It is close to the station for the train home, a short walk from the cable car, and you can go straight to bed after the night sea. Sono Calm Yeosu is near the city-side cable car station; it was rated 9.2/10 from 184 reviews on Trip.com when we checked on October 18, 2026.
If you have already done Busan, Yeosu pairs well with it in a south coast loop. Our Seoul to Busan KTX guide explains booking and seats.
