Gapyeong 2026: A Day Trip from Seoul by Train (Nami Island, Petite France, Rail Bike)

Ask a Korean family where they went on their first school trip, or a couple where they had their first day out of Seoul, and the answer is often Gapyeong. It is a county of river valleys and pine hills about an hour east of the city.

Most foreign visitors know only one place there: Nami Island, the tree-lined island in the Bukhan River. But Gapyeong has more. A rail bike on an old train line. A French-themed village from K-dramas. Riverside restaurants grilling spicy chicken.

The good news: you can do all of it in one day by train, without a car and without a tour.

Checked on October 29, 2026. Admission prices for Nami Island, Petite France and the rail bike could not be confirmed for 2026. Check on each official site or at the ticket booth.

How to get to Gapyeong from Seoul

Seoul to Gapyeong transport options table

The fastest way is the ITX-Cheongchun, a reserved-seat train from Yongsan or Cheongnyangni to Gapyeong Station. It takes about an hour. You need a ticket for it; your T-money card will not open the gate. Fares quoted by travel guides vary, so check Korail when you book.

The cheaper way is the Gyeongchun Line, a commuter line you ride with T-money. It is slower, about an hour and a half from Cheongnyangni, and you may have to stand on weekends.

Book the ITX return at the same time as the outbound. On autumn and spring weekends the evening trains fill up.

Getting around Gapyeong

Outside Gapyeong Station, the Gapyeong City Tour Bus loops between the station, the Nami Island wharf, Petite France, the Garden of Morning Calm and the rail park. A travel blog lists a day pass at about 8,000 won, with buses about once an hour. Check the price and timetable at the stop, because they change.

Taxis also wait at the station. For two or three people, a taxi between stops is often faster than waiting for the bus.

You will want maps on your phone. Google Maps does not give full directions in Korea, so use Naver Map or KakaoMap. Both need mobile data. A Korea eSIM is the easiest fix.

If you would rather not plan any of this, a day tour from Seoul covers the main sights.

The one-day plan

Morning: Gapyeong Rail Park

Start with the rail bike. Old railway tracks that once carried the Gyeongchun Line now carry four-seat pedal carts through the countryside. You pedal past fields and over a river bridge, and the wheels clack on the joints like an old train.

Weekend slots sell out, so reserve ahead on the official site if you can. Prices depend on the bike size; check when you book.

Late morning: Nami Island

From Gapyeong Station it is a short taxi or about a 20-minute walk to Gapyeong Wharf, where the ferry crosses to Nami Island in a few minutes. Your admission covers the boat. There is also a zipline from the mainland if you want a faster, louder arrival.

Nami Island is small and flat. Walk the metasequoia avenue and the pine tree lane, the two tree tunnels everyone photographs. In autumn the metasequoias turn rust-orange, and the leaves crunch underfoot. Ostriches and rabbits wander around the lawns.

Give it two to three hours. Weekday mornings are much quieter than weekend afternoons.

Lunch: dakgalbi

Gapyeong, like nearby Chuncheon, is dakgalbi country. Chicken, cabbage, sweet potato and rice cakes are stir-fried in a red chili sauce on a big iron pan at your table. Finish by asking for rice to be fried in the leftover sauce. Restaurants line the road near the wharf. For more on the dish, see our Chuncheon guide.

Afternoon: Petite France

Petite France is a small village of pastel buildings on a hill above the river, built around the story of The Little Prince. You will recognize it if you watch K-dramas. Next door is an Italian-themed village with a Pinocchio theme. It is kitsch, and that is part of the fun. There are puppet shows, small exhibits and lots of corners for photos.

Then take the city tour bus or a taxi back to the station for your train.

If you have more time: the Garden of Morning Calm

The Garden of Morning Calm is a large private garden in the hills. In winter it hosts a lighting festival with millions of small lights, which is the main reason people go after dark. It is further out, so it works better as a second day or instead of the rail bike.
