Suwon Hwaseong Fortress 2026: A Day Trip from Seoul and the Wall Walk

Most day trips from Seoul mean a long coach ride. Suwon is different. You can get on Line 1 in the city center, read for an hour, and step off a short bus ride from a stone fortress wall that loops around an entire old town.

Suwon Hwaseong Fortress was built in the 1790s by King Jeongjo and is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Unlike many palaces in Seoul, here you can walk on the wall itself, about 5.7 km of it, past gates, watchtowers and a pavilion over a lotus pond. This guide is the version a Seoul resident would give a friend: how to get there, which way to walk, and what to skip.

Checked on October 23, 2026. Ticket prices and hours change; sources for the wall entry fee and the tour train fare disagree, so check on the day.

Getting there from Seoul

How to get to Suwon Hwaseong Fortress from Seoul table

The cheapest way is Subway Line 1 to Suwon Station. It takes about an hour from Seoul Station and costs the same as a long subway ride. If you are in Gangnam, the Suin-Bundang Line also ends at Suwon Station. Faster Korail trains from Seoul Station cut the ride to about 30 minutes; book them in the Korail app.

From Suwon Station, the fortress is about 10 to 15 minutes by city bus or taxi. Take a bus toward Paldalmun (the south gate) or Hwaseong Haenggung. Bus numbers change, so check on Naver Map or KakaoMap, which show live buses; Google Maps does not give full transit directions in Korea.

For all of that you need data. A Korea eSIM that also gives you a T-money card covers both the maps and the fares.

The wall walk, gate by gate

The full loop is about 5.7 km. With stops and photos, plan on 2 to 3 hours. Walk it clockwise from Paldalmun: you get the one real climb, Paldalsan Hill, out of the way early, while your legs are fresh, and finish downhill near the palace and the cafes.

Paldalmun and Paldalsan Hill

Paldalmun, the south gate, sits in a traffic circle with a round outer wall. From here the wall climbs Paldalsan Hill on stone steps. It is short but steep. At the top, the whole fortress is laid out below you: the wall snaking around the old town, the palace roofs in the middle, and modern Suwon all around.

Hwaseomun and Janganmun

The wall runs down past Hwaseomun, the west gate, to Janganmun, the north gate. Janganmun is the main gate of the fortress and one of the biggest city gates in Korea. Stand under it and look up at the wooden structure.

Hwahongmun and Banghwasuryujeong

This is the most photographed corner. Hwahongmun is a gate built over the stream, with seven stone arches for the water. Just above it is Banghwasuryujeong, a pavilion overlooking a small pond. On a still day the pavilion sits perfectly in the water. Locals bring snacks and sit on the grass here.

Yeonmudae and back to the palace

The wall continues to Yeonmudae, an open field once used for archery training. From here, walk down into town to Hwaseong Haenggung, the king’s temporary palace.

If you would rather not walk the whole loop, the Hwaseong Eocha tour train runs around part of the fortress. Sources disagree on the fare, and it does not run in rain or snow, so check at the ticket booth.

Hwaseong Haenggung Palace

Hwaseong Haenggung is where the king stayed when he visited Suwon. It is open 9 am to 6 pm, last entry 5 pm, and the adult ticket is 2,000 won. A combined ticket for the palace and two Suwon museums is 4,000 won. Wearing hanbok can get you a discount.

In 2026 the palace also opened at night from May 1 to November 1, Friday to Sunday, 6 pm to 9:30 pm. If you visit before then, it is worth staying for the lanterns.

Haenggung-dong, food and Starfield

The streets around the palace, often called Haenggung-dong or Haengridan-gil, are full of small cafes, bakeries and craft shops in low houses. It is a good place to rest after the wall.

Suwon is famous for Suwon galbi: large, marinated beef ribs grilled at the table. It is not cheap, but it is the meal people come here for. If you have time, Starfield Suwon has a huge library-style hall of bookshelves that has become a photo spot of its own.

If you would rather not plan buses, a day tour from Seoul combines the fortress, Starfield Library and Haenggung-dong.

When to go

Spring and autumn are best: the wall is lined with cherry blossoms in April and red and yellow trees in late October and early November. Summer is hot and exposed; there is little shade on the wall. In winter, go on a clear day, wear good shoes and be careful on Paldalsan’s steps, which can be icy.
