Ulsan, Korea 2026: A 2-Day Trip by KTX (Bamboo Forest, Sea Rocks, Whales)

This guide contains affiliate links to Trip.com. If you book through them, Korea Local Guide may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. It does not change what is recommended or the order of the route.

Ask a Korean about Ulsan and they will probably mention shipyards, car plants, and good wages. It is not a place most visitors think of for a holiday.

That reputation is why it is worth a look. There is a bamboo forest on a river in the middle of the city. There are wind-carved rocks on the sea. There is an old whaling port. And you get them without the crowds you find in nearby Busan or Gyeongju.

One warning before you book. The KTX station is not in Ulsan, not really. That one fact shapes the whole trip.

Checked on November 1, 2026. Fares, hours and bus routes come from recent listings and guides, and they do not always agree. Check Naver Map and each official site on the day.

Getting to Ulsan

KTX runs from Seoul Station to Ulsan Station (also known as Sinulsan) in about 2 to 2.3 hours. KTX-Eum also runs from Suseo on some services. The city announced a fare cut to 48,000 won to Seoul, but many guides still list 53,500 won, so check Korail for the fare on your date.

Here is the catch: the station is about 20 km from the center of the city. From there, buses 357 or 5003 (express) go to the Taehwa-dong stop for the garden, and a bus or taxi takes about 20 to 25 minutes. Do not book a hotel “near Ulsan” assuming it is close to everything. Look at the map first.

From Busan, it is easy to come for a night. The Donghae Line train from Bujeon stops at Taehwagang Station, closer to the center than the KTX station, and it is often the better choice. Check the current timetable in the Korail app. If you are already on the coast, Gyeongju is nearby too.

Attractions here are spread out, and that is the truth about this city. One guide suggests a car, but you do not need one. Use buses with Naver Map or KakaoMap, and accept a few taxi rides. Both apps need mobile data, and Google Maps does not give full directions in Korea, so get a Korea eSIM before you arrive. Our taxi app guide covers the booking side.

The map shows the order, not the true distances.

Day 1: Taehwagang National Garden and the bamboo

Taehwagang National Garden is a long riverside park, and its star is the Simni bamboo forest, about 4 km of tall bamboo along the Taehwa River. One guide lists the bamboo forest as free to enter.

Walk it in the late afternoon. The stems knock together softly in the wind, the light turns green and then gold, and the river sits flat beside you. It reminds a lot of people of Damyang’s bamboo forest, except this one is in the middle of a working city. If you like this kind of thing, compare it with our Damyang guide.

The garden has seasonal flower fields, and autumn is often promoted as a peak. In winter, the bamboo stays green while everything around it fades, which makes it one of the better cold-weather walks in this part of Korea.

Have dinner around the downtown area and stay nearby. Ulsan is a city of workers, which means grilled meat and generous portions, with few signs in English. Point at what the next table is having. It usually works.

Day 2 morning: Daewangam Park

Daewangam Park is on the east coast, on the side of the city with the shipyards. It is known for its old pines, a coastal path, a suspension bridge, and a cluster of reddish sea rocks joined by a footbridge.

Come early if you can. The sun comes up straight out of the East Sea, and the rocks go orange for a few minutes. Wind and salt spray hit your face near the end of the path, so bring a layer even in spring. Check the hours and any fee for the suspension bridge on the day.

Day 2 afternoon: Jangsaengpo

Jangsaengpo was Korea’s whaling port until commercial whaling ended. It has reinvented itself around whales, with a museum and a re-creation of the old village.

The Whale Museum costs about 2,000 won for adults and is closed on Mondays. Its hours are listed differently by different sources, from about 9:00 or 9:30 to 18:00, later on some weekends. The Whale Culture Village next door is listed at 2,000 or 3,000 won, depending on the source, and it is also closed on Mondays. It is a hillside of 1960s-style houses and shops, a slightly odd and rather charming look at what the port used to be like.

Plan for Tuesday to Sunday, or swap your days around to avoid the closure.

Whale meat is still sold in some restaurants around here. It is a local tradition, and a controversial one. You can skip it without offending anybody.

If you have more time

The Bangudae petroglyphs, carved into a riverside cliff and showing whales, are among the oldest known depictions of whaling, and they were added to the UNESCO list in 2025. They are inland, the viewing is from a distance, and getting there takes time without a car. Go if you love this kind of history, but check access first.

The Yeongnam Alps mountains to the west are a serious hiking area, and they are at their best in autumn when the silver grass turns.

FAQ

Is Ulsan worth visiting?

Yes, if you have seen the main sights in Busan and Gyeongju, or you want somewhere with few other tourists. It is not a first-trip priority.

How far is Ulsan from Busan?

Close enough for a day trip. The Donghae Line train is often the easiest, ending near the center at Taehwagang Station. Check the timetable.

How do I get from KTX Ulsan Station to the city center?

By bus or taxi, about 20 to 25 minutes or more depending on your stop. The station is about 20 km outside the center.

Do I need a car in Ulsan?

No, but you will use buses and some taxis. Attractions are spread out, so group them by area.

What is Ulsan famous for?

Heavy industry, including shipbuilding and cars, as well as the Taehwagang bamboo forest and its whaling history.

The short version

Come by train, and base yourself near the center rather than the KTX station. Spend the late afternoon in the bamboo, the early morning at Daewangam, and the last hours at Jangsaengpo, as long as it is not a Monday.
