Busan to Jeju 2026: Flights, the Ferry Question and Which Bus to Take

A lot of people arrive in Busan, look at the map, see the sea, and want to sail to Jeju. It looks like the obvious way to go.

Older guides still describe it that way. Recent ones say the direct passenger ferry is no longer running, and that the crossings now leave from further west. So for almost everybody, Busan to Jeju means a one-hour flight.

The flight itself is the easy part. The steps people get wrong are the airport building, the ID, and the bus at the other end.

Checked on November 1, 2026. Ferry status comes from recent travel guides rather than an operator notice. Fares move daily, so treat every number below as a snapshot and check before you book.

The flight: what to expect

Flights leave Gimhae International Airport (PUS) and land at Jeju International Airport (CJU). The flight is about an hour, or up to 1 hour 20 minutes by some counts. One guide counts 300 to 400 departures a week, so outside holidays, you rarely have to plan your whole trip around one flight.

Fares vary a lot. A Korean Air page showed a lowest fare of 45,900 won for a date in September 2026, and one guide lists economy fares from about 23 US dollars. Weekends, Korean school holidays and long weekends cost more and sell out first.

Airlines flying Busan to Jeju table

A cheap fare does not always include a checked bag. If you are mid-trip with a large suitcase, add the bag fee before you compare. Sometimes the full-service fare wins.

Booking as a foreigner

Korean domestic airline sites are mostly fine in English, but some will not take a foreign card smoothly. If yours fails, a large booking site is the simple fallback. Book with your name exactly as in your passport.

Bring your passport. You need it to board a domestic flight. A photo on your phone is not something I would rely on. Keep power banks with you rather than in checked bags, and follow what the airline tells you on the day, since Korean carriers have tightened their battery rules.

Getting to Gimhae Airport

The domestic terminal is a separate building from the international one. They are walkable, but check your terminal, and allow time if you have just landed from abroad.

From central Busan, the usual way is the subway plus the Busan-Gimhae Light Rail, changing at Sasang (Line 2) or Daejeo (Line 3). Haeundae is on the far side of the city from the airport, so allow more than an hour by subway at busy times. With bags, a taxi or airport bus can be worth it. Check the route on Naver Map on the day.

Naver Map and KakaoMap need mobile data, and Google Maps does not give full directions in Korea. If you have not sorted that yet, a Korea eSIM is the easy fix.

What about the ferry?

Recent guides agree that no direct passenger ferry links Busan and Jeju, and that Jeju’s ferries now sail from places such as Wando, Mokpo, Yeosu and Nokdong. I would not plan around a Busan sailing unless an operator confirms it for your date.

If you really want to arrive by sea, the realistic way is to go west first. Take a train to Mokpo, spend a night there, and sail from there. It makes sense if you were heading that way anyway, and our Mokpo guide has the details. If your only aim is to reach Jeju, fly. Winter crossings can also be cancelled because of wind.

Landing at Jeju Airport

Jeju Airport bus table

Jeju Airport is at the north edge of Jeju City, so the city itself is a short ride away. The airport limousine 600 runs through the Jungmun resort area and ends at the Seogwipo KAL Hotel, about 50 minutes to Jungmun and about 80 minutes to the end of the line. Buses 800 and 800-1 skip Jungmun and head straight to Seogwipo. Fare sources differ slightly, but they’re around 4,500 to 5,500 won, and you can pay in cash or by T-money on the 600.

Step outside into the air and you may notice it first: it smells of salt, and in winter the wind hits harder than it did in Busan.

Where to stay

If you land late, sleep near the airport or in Jeju City and move on in the morning. These two are in Jeju City and worth comparing on your dates.

For the south coast, our Seogwipo guide explains how to get around without a car.

What to do once you arrive

Foreign visitors often assume they need a car in Jeju. You do not, though you will need more time. Our 4-day Jeju itinerary shows one route by bus and taxi. If you are coming between December and February, read Jeju in winter. For a day with someone else driving, there are also bus tours.

Coming from the capital rather than Busan? Our Seoul to Jeju flight guide covers that route. It is one of the busiest in the world, with more choice of flights.

Tips for a smooth day

  • Book early for weekends, and especially for Korean holidays.
  • Arrive an hour before departure at least, and more on holiday weekends.
  • Check your terminal, and carry your passport in your hand luggage.
  • Winter wind sometimes delays Jeju flights. Do not book a tight connection the same day.
  • Save your hotel’s Korean address for taxi drivers.
