In early March, Seoul still feels like winter. People wear long padded coats in the morning, and the trees in the palaces are bare. Then, sometime in the second half of the month, the south of the country turns yellow and pink, and spring moves north by roughly a few days each week.
That is the key to a March trip in Korea: start in the south and follow the flowers. Cherry blossom season itself is mostly an April thing in Seoul, but March is when it begins, prices are lower than in April, and the first flowers come with far smaller crowds.
Checked on October 24, 2026. Weather figures are long-term averages and flower timings are typical years, not a 2027 forecast. Official blossom forecasts come out in February and March; check them before you book.

Weather in March

March is a month of big swings. A Seoul morning can be just above freezing and the afternoon 12 C in the sun. Pack layers: a warm jacket, a sweater, and something light for the afternoon. The south and Jeju are milder but windy.
Fine dust
Spring is fine dust season in Korea. Some days the sky turns hazy and the air quality index goes red. Koreans check an air quality app each morning and wear a KF94 mask on bad days. Buy a few at any convenience store; plan indoor sights like museums on those days.
Which flowers bloom in March

Plum and sansuyu
The first blossoms are plum in Gwangyang, in the far south, usually in early to mid March, followed by the yellow sansuyu (cornelian cherry) villages around Gurye. Both have festivals in a typical year, and both are best reached on a day tour or with a train and a local bus.
Canola on Jeju
On Jeju, fields of yellow canola bloom through March into April, especially on the east side around Seongsan. Pair them with the black stone walls and the sea and it is the island’s most photographed season. Our Jeju in winter guide covers getting around the island without a car.
The first cherry blossoms
Cherry blossoms usually open first on Jeju and in Busan from around the end of March. The famous Jinhae festival in Changwon ran from March 27 to about April 5 in 2026; travel sites list early April for 2027, but the official dates were not out when this was checked. Seoul usually blooms in early April.
Holidays and events
- March 1 is Independence Movement Day, a public holiday. Expect flags and ceremonies, and busier trains around a long weekend.
- Early March is the start of the Korean school year, so domestic travel quietens down after the February holidays.
- March 14 is White Day, when people return Valentine’s gifts. Shops are full of candy.
- Ski season usually ends in early to mid March. See our ski resorts guide if you want one last day on snow.
A south-first route for March
If you have a week to ten days, start in the south late in the month and move north:
1. Jeju (2 to 3 days) for canola fields and the first cherry blossoms.
2. Busan (2 days) for the coast and early blossoms. See our Busan itinerary.
3. Gyeongju (1 to 2 days), where cherry trees around the royal tombs and Bomun Lake are some of Korea’s best. Our Gyeongju itinerary has the route.
4. Seoul (2 to 3 days) at the end, catching the first buds or arriving just before the peak.
If you come in early March instead, flip it: Seoul and the palaces in crisp, clear weather, then south for plum blossoms.
Getting around
The KTX connects Seoul, Daegu, Busan and Gyeongju in a few hours; our Seoul to Busan KTX guide explains tickets. In cities, a T-money card covers subways and buses. Use Naver Map or KakaoMap, because Google Maps does not give full transit directions in Korea, and you need mobile data for them.
Budget

Hotels in late March near blossom spots, especially Jinhae, Gyeongju and Jeju, rise sharply on the peak weekend. Book early if your dates are fixed, and leave a day of slack if you are chasing a particular bloom.
What to pack
- A warm jacket for mornings and evenings
- Light layers for afternoons in the sun
- Comfortable walking shoes; you will walk a lot under the trees
- A few KF94 masks for fine dust days
- A small umbrella; spring showers are common
