Nami Island in Winter 2026/27: Snow Odds, Getting There, a One-Day Plan

Every photo of Nami Island in winter shows the same thing: a straight lane of tall bare trees, deep white snow, and nobody else around.

That day exists. It is just not every day, and it never lasts long. I live in Korea, and the first thing I tell friends is that you cannot book snow. You can only give yourself a decent chance, and plan a day that still works if the ground is brown.

So here is the honest version, including what to do when the snow does not show up.

Checked on November 1, 2026. The official 2026/27 winter program had not appeared in anything I could find, so last season’s dates are marked as last season’s. Ticket prices differ between sites. Confirm on the official Nami Island site before you go.

When is there actually snow?

December temperatures run from about 3°C down to -8°C, and guides call the chance of snow high. January is generally the coldest month, and snow tends to come in short spells. It can fall overnight, look perfect until lunchtime, and get trampled by the afternoon.

Three things improve your odds:

  • Come on a weekday, and go early. Fresh snow only stays clean until the crowds arrive.
  • Keep your date flexible. Check the forecast for Chuncheon or Gapyeong two days ahead, and swap days if you can.
  • Stay nearby the night before if snow is the whole reason for your trip.

How to get to Nami Island from Seoul

Seoul to Nami Island transport table

The train is the simple choice. ITX-Cheongchun runs from Yongsan in about an hour, and from Cheongnyangni in about 55 minutes, to Gapyeong Station. From there, a local bus costs about 1,000 won and takes around 10 minutes to the wharf. A taxi was about 5,000 won in recent guides. In winter, a taxi is well worth it if there are two of you.

Then there is the ferry from Gapyeong Wharf. It only takes a few minutes, and on a clear cold day the wind on the water wakes you up fast.

Getting around Korea needs Naver Map or KakaoMap, because Google Maps does not give full directions here. Both need mobile data, so a Korea eSIM is one less thing to sort out on a cold station platform.

Tickets: why the price seems to change

You will see different numbers. A 2026 guide listed 19,000 won for regular admission, with 16,000 and 13,000 won for discount and special categories. Other sites quote 13,000 won, and older guides list less. The ferry is included in the ticket, so you do not pay twice.

Resellers sometimes sell a discounted bundle. Compare before you pay, and read what is included.

What to see on the island

The metasequoia lane is the one in the photos, and the reason most people come. Go there first, before the group tours reach it. When it has snowed, the only sound is your boots creaking, and the cold makes your nose sting. It is worth the early start.

The Winter Sonata spots are why Nami became famous abroad. The 2002 drama still draws fans, and you will see the statues and the photo lines. Fair warning: the lines can be longer than the visit.

The riverside path is quiet and beautiful, and also the windiest walk on the island. Do a short loop, and head back in when your hands complain.

Food on the island is simple. It will not be the best meal of your trip, but on a -5°C day, a hot bowl of anything tastes wonderful.

Is there a winter festival?

The most recent edition I could find ran from December 1, 2025, to February 28, 2026. Sledding has run in early January to early February in past seasons. I could not find confirmed dates for 2026/27, so treat these as last season’s pattern and check the official site.

What to wear

The island is flat, but you will spend hours outdoors, and the wind comes off the water.

  • A long padded coat, the kind most Koreans wear from December
  • Thermal layers, and a hat that covers your ears
  • Boots with real grip, since packed snow on paths gets slippery
  • Gloves that work with your phone
  • Heat packs. Convenience stores sell them cheaply, see our convenience store guide

Add something else, or take a tour

If you would like someone else to deal with the logistics, day tours pair Nami with other stops. One option adds an ice valley, which suits January. Another adds the Garden of Morning Calm and Petite France. Read the dates and the pickup point, since winter tours change by season.

For a slower day on your own, see our Gapyeong day trip guide. If Nami leaves you wanting more of the same landscape, Chuncheon is a short train ride further along the same line.

FAQ

Does Nami Island get snow every winter?

It usually gets some, but it is not constant. Snow comes in spells, so a given day may have none on the ground.

Is Nami Island worth visiting without snow?

Yes, if you go in with the right expectations. The tree lanes are still striking, and it is a calm break from Seoul, though the colors are muted.

How long do you need on the island?

Three to four hours is plenty in the cold. Add about four hours for the trip there and back.

Can I do Nami Island without a tour?

Easily. The train, a short taxi and the ferry are all straightforward, even if you do not speak any Korean.

What is the best month for snow on Nami Island?

January is generally the coldest. Late December and early February can also deliver, but nothing is guaranteed.

The short version

Take the early ITX to Gapyeong, get to the metasequoia lane before the tour buses, and dress for -8°C. Watch the forecast and stay flexible if snow matters to you. If the ground is brown, enjoy the quiet, have some hot soup, and head back before dark.
