Every foreign visitor is told to go to Hongdae. Hardly anyone tells them that there is no single Hongdae to go to.
The name is short for Hongik University, and it now stands for a whole wedge of western Seoul: shopping lanes, cafe streets, a park built on an old railway, a noisy nightlife strip, and a traditional market. Come out of the wrong subway exit, and you can spend an hour in a place you did not want to be.
Here is what I tell friends. Pick your exit first, then your time of day.
Checked on October 31, 2026. Exit numbers and hours come from recent guides. Shops turn over quickly here, so check Naver Map before you set out for any one place.

How to get to Hongdae

Hongik University Station is on Line 2, the AREX airport line, and the Gyeongui-Jungang Line, so it is a practical place to stay. The AREX all-stop takes about 66 minutes from Incheon Airport, with no transfer. Read our airport guide to compare it with the bus.
Use Naver Map or KakaoMap to get around. Google Maps does not give full walking directions in Korea, and Hongdae’s small lanes are confusing. Both need mobile data, and a Korea eSIM keeps it simple.
Which exit to use

Exit 9 is the classic exit for the shopping area and Eoulmadang-ro, the main walking street. Exit 3 leads straight onto the Gyeongui Line Forest Park and on to Yeonnam-dong. Guides do not always agree on the small details, so follow the station’s signs, which are in English.
A one-day plan

Morning: Gyeongui Line Forest Park
Start at Exit 3. Gyeongui Line Forest Park, which locals jokingly call Yeontral Park, is a long strip of grass and trees on top of an old rail line. The Yeonnam section runs about 1.3 km. In the morning, you get joggers and dog walkers. The smell of roasting coffee drifts from the side streets.
Midday: Yeonnam-dong
Turn off the park into the lanes on either side, and you are in Yeonnam-dong. Most of the old houses here are now cafes, small restaurants, and tiny shops. It is calmer than Hongdae proper, except on weekend afternoons. Some of the best lunches are simply the places with a short line of locals. You do not need a list. Walk until something smells good.
Afternoon and evening: the Walking Street
Late afternoon is when Hongdae wakes up. Walk across to the shopping streets around Exit 9, with cosmetics shops, photo booths, clothes stands and K-pop merchandise. If you came for fashion, this is the part you came for.
From around sunset, buskers set up along the street, particularly on Fridays and weekends. Dance crews with speakers draw huge crowds. Stand at the back of the crowd for the full effect, and yes, it is fine to drop in a tip if there is a box. It is the one place in Korea where you might, since tipping is otherwise not a thing.
If you want something ticketed, Nanta, the long-running kitchen percussion show, has a theater in Hongdae. It needs no Korean at all. The listing showed tickets from about 32,000 won when I checked on October 31, 2026. Prices move, so confirm yours.
Dinner: Hapjeong
A short walk south, Hapjeong is quieter and often a little cheaper than the main strip. Korean barbecue and small izakaya-style bars are the local habit. It is also a good base if the Hongdae noise sounds like too much.
If you have a free morning: Mangwon Market
Mangwon Market, about a stop away on Line 6 from Hapjeong, is a covered neighborhood market with hot fried snacks, fish cake and very low prices. It is not a tourist market, which is the charm. From there it is a short walk to Mangwon Hangang Park. Sunset on the Han River with convenience store ramen is one of the small joys of Seoul, and you can learn how in our Korean convenience store guide.
Nightlife: what you should know
One Seoul tourism guide says that the main streets stay lively until around 3:00 on weekends. A few honest points:
- Some clubs and bars enforce age caps of around 30, occasionally lower. One 2026 guide mentions caps as low as 25 or 28. Do not take it personally.
- Bring ID. You have to be 19 or over to drink, and passports are the usual proof.
- The subway does not run all night. Check your last train, or budget for a taxi. Our taxi app guide helps with late pickups, since hailing here on a Friday is difficult.
- Be careful with your drink and with anyone who insists on taking you to a particular bar.
If you do not want to work out the bars on your own, a guided bar-hopping tour is one way to meet people. Listings started around 21,000 won when I checked, and they also cover Itaewon, so read which area and dates you are booking.
Should you stay in Hongdae?
Yes, if you are in your 20s or 30s, want to go out, or care about the direct airport train. Hostels and small hotels are plentiful. It is a poor choice if you want an early night, since weekend noise carries, or if your plans focus on the palaces, which are on the other side of the city. Our 5-day Seoul itinerary shows how a Hongdae day fits into a longer trip.
